Late Winter River Smallmouth; Throwing Darts

タイトル:Late Winter River Smallmouth; Throwing Darts
The analogy for presenting a finesse jig to a specific tiny feature of swirling foam to catch cold water river smallmouth being like a game of darts is as follows; First you need to go to where there’s a dart board (the river), then once your at the establishment, you need to figure out where the dart boards are and walk towards that side of the room (the winter pool). Just being there and making casts (or throwing darts) doesn’t mean that you land on the bulls eye, or getting double or triple 20’s. Each of the “eat spots" or “spot within the spot" in a winter pool represent the kinds of hard bottom, no or low current areas these cold bass go to eat. It’s a precise sort of thing. Once you put your jig in the right spot, it’s best to let it linger there until it gets thumped.
In this adventure, I revisit a section of a winter pool on the Juniata that I was on two weeks prior. I only caught one smallmouth during that trip, a thick 18.5 incher, but knew that there were lots of other fish to be had. In this follow up trip, I found three over 19 inches by picking apart every part of a 150 yard section of swirling or still foam.
